LASIK (Laser in-situ Keratomileusis) is the latest advancement in laser surgical procedures for the eye, a process that removes microscopic layers of tissue to change the shape of the cornea and allow light to focus more directly on the retina. Laser vision correction began in the 1980s and enjoys growing popularity today. Ultramodern Excimer laser technology provides increased flexibility and is effective toward correcting nearsightedness, farsightedness and astigmatism.
Benefits
Results cannot be guaranteed, but many patients have achieved incredible vision improvement through LASIK. Most patients who undergo a LASIK procedure will be able to pass a driver's license vision test without corrective lenses, and many will achieve 20/20 vision. A small percentage of patients may still require glasses for reading or to correct distance problems, but the vast majority will show greatly improved vision. LASIK has freed thousands of Central Texans from the hassles and restrictions of glasses and contact lenses, enabling them to lead fuller, more productive, more confident lives.
Risks
Any surgical procedure involves risk and you should be informed of potential hazards associated with laser eye surgery. Among the risks are: undercorrection, leading to nearsightedness; overcorrection, leading to farsightedness; night glare, causing a haze from lights at night; poor night vision; loss of visual sharpness; eye infection or irritation; increased light sensitivity; possible follow-up surgery or continued use of corrective lenses; hastening of age-related drooping of the eyelids; or adverse reaction to anesthesia or medications. There is a less than 1 percent risk of a serious vision complication resulting from a LASIK procedure.
Your Vision Options
Before deciding on your course of vision correction, know your options. While LASIK has proven an effective, long-term solution for thousands of Central Texans, others have found success with PRK (Photorefractive Keratomy), Epi-LASEK, eyeglasses, contact lenses and other corrective measures. Consult our eye specialist to determine the best solution for your vision needs.
